How to Deal with People Who Monopolize Conversations

We recently asked our Facebook community, "How do you deal with someone who talks over you and doesn't listen? They keep going on and on." Here are some of their thoughtful responses.

Dawn Smith: Reduce the time spent with them to nil ...move on.

Ivy Pittman: Tune out! Let them keep talking. When they have run out of breath and words, I then speak.

Leon Smith: Ask a million questions and change the conversation. See where that takes them.

Leanna Laskey: Talk to them about it and ask them to stop. They may not even realize they're doing it. Depending on the dynamics, talk to them 1:1 and let them know you will be calling them out on the spot if it happens in the future (not in a condescending way). And then keep your promise. It usually only takes a few times before they stop.

Stacey Hanke Inc: You listen. Just listen to what they have to say. Understand what type of communicator they are and adapt your style to theirs. At some point, an interrupter or controller will realize they are dominating the conversation.
Ana Lucia Novak: Over-talkers are not good or active listeners. It forces people to be rude and interrupt them.
