About Helene

Fathers & Daughters

Through the decades, a father's role has changed: Whether the primary breadwinner or a partner in a dual-career family, many of today's fathers are taking a more active role in raising their children. Although fathers have always had enormous influence over their daughters' future success and happiness, they are becoming increasingly aware of how they can help them to grow up feeling confident, competent and able to make good choices. The bonds created by this new arrangement are strong, but these relationships are not without strain.

The half-hour public television documentary, Fathers & Daughters: Journeys of the Heart explores this powerful yet delicate connection through the eyes of experts and father-daughter duos who offer practical advice and movingly share their personal experiences.

Featured in Fathers & Daughters are: Joe Kelly, President of Dads and Daughters (DADs), a national nonprofit advocacy group based in Duluth, Minnesota, that encourages fathers to actively and deeply engage in their daughters' lives; Dr. Linda Nielsen, a North Carolina writer and university professor who talks about growing up in a traditional family during the 1950s and about the changing but always important role her father played in her life; Tom and Kate Collinger, a father and daughter whose bond deepened after Kate's mother became terminally ill; The Wiley-Littles, a modern Chicago family in which parenting duties are shared, resulting in a close connection between teenager Kial and her father, Brian; and Bobbi Brown, CEO and founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, who calls her father "one of my best friends in the world."
