4 Steps To Help You Speak Up For Yourself

No one really likes making waves, and when you speak up for yourself, you risk doing that. But if you keep in what you really feel, you eat away at your aliveness.

I offer these tips to support you to do things differently. 

1. Call on your courage
Think of a time you sat there and didn’t speak up – how horrible did you feel? Probably very, so muster up your courage to get the words out.

2. Be short and to the point
Collect your thoughts. What do you really want to say and why is it necessary? After you write this down, ask yourself, is there anything more? If so, add it to the list. Role-play with a supportive friend so you can practice sharing.

3. You are doing the other person a favor
Think of it this way, the other person probably treats lots of people like this. If you hold back, they are not getting your honest feedback which could be useful for them in the long run.

4. Reflect on how your relationship will be stronger
Important things left unsaid usually create resentment. Being able to share honestly brings people closer together. Whether in business or in your personal life, it is the foundation for loyalty and trust.
