Overcoming Winter Doldrums

Happy 2011! It’s going to be a great year! Everybody has been saying it.

For New Yorkers, a touch of premature spring was in the air after last week’s blizzard, making the optimism even more contagious. But it shall not last, and the January cold will return. Though it is the time to buckle down and focus on goals and resolutions, the doldrums inevitably sneak up from time to time. How do you cheer yourself up when feeling blue?

For me, it can be a trip to a museum. Yesterday, when I started to feel bummed about the holidays being over, my husband and I took the subway to the Museum of Modern Art. As soon as we were inside walking among stylish people and beautiful artwork, I felt refreshed. We saw the Andy Warhol Motion Pictures exhibit, which displayed several of his black and white silent films.

Returning back to the main floor, we caught a glimpse of something peculiar taking place from the escalator. Closer inspection found a woman who was literally playing a piano inertly while moving slowly through the space. It was bizarre and totally cool. Modern art doesn’t always have to make sense, but it can inspire me to stand out from the crowd and take risks.

Where is your happy place during the winter? For Helene, it’s a trip to a Chelsea flower market to buy roses. The colors, scents and sounds make her feel like she’s been transported to Ecuador. Wherever it may be, I hope you have a January that is filled with hope and inspiration.

It really is going to be a great year!
