Women and Heart Disease

Today is National Wear Red Day. The facts are startling. Heart disease is the number-one killer of women in the United States. Yet, many women continue to deny they are vulnerable; they still believe men are at higher-risk.

Heartbeat to Heartbeat: Women and Heart Disease is an urgent wake-up call that encourages viewers to take action towards improving their cardiovascular health. The program provides useful information on risk factors, symptoms and prevention, explores the emotional impact of the disease, and reveals just how important it is for women to ask questions of healthcare professionals, and to reach out for support when they need it.

Here are highlights of our public television program, featuring Pamela Serure, co-founder and Executive Director of Events of the Heart, Virgie Harris-Bovelle, Dr. Susan Bennett and actor Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess). Although the program aired several years ago, the information is still relevant. This is National Women’s Heart Week and for additional information, visit Women Heart–National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, Go Red for Women–American Heart Association, and the Heart Truth Campaign–National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
