7-year-old Elliot James Blackport and his sister, 4-year-old Evelyn, passed away October 9th in a housefire in Kalamazoo. An adult male and an additional child were able to escape.
Neighbors report that the family lived in the house for around a month when a fire broke out in the morning. Ciara Coleman, a resident of the neighborhood, recalled an adult male who escaped the flames reportedly said his children were still inside the house and identified a woman who arrived on the scene later as the children’s mother.
Firefighters had to restrain the woman from entering the burning house, which was not extinguished for more than an hour.
Fellow neighbor, Antwan Perkins, said the woman “was running around saying that her kids were in there: ‘Help, help. Somebody help, my kids are still in the house. […] They tried to run up in the house to get the kids, but the flames were too much for them.”
