Former One Direction heartthrob Zayn Malik recently broke his silence on his tumultuous and private relationship with mother-in-law Yolanda Hadid. Six years have passed since Malik, 30, gave his last public interview. Malik joined the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper in Pennsylvania where both are currently with their separate families.
Malik shares a daughter, Kai, with supermodel Gigi Hadid, and the pair have been spotted together since 2015. They officially split in October 2021 after allegations came out about Malik’s behavior towards his mother-in-law. UsWeekly reported on when Malik pleaded no contest to four criminal offenses of harassment.
According to Yolanda, Malik shoved her into a dresser while saying profanities at her. The news originally broke on October 28, 2021 after the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum said that the “Pillowtalk” singer had struck her. Zayn took to Twitter where he asked that the matter be held privately.
Now Malik has provided some insight on the situation during his most recent trip to the Barstool podcast. Malik said of the 2021 incident, “I knew what the situation was. I knew what happened, and the people involved knew what happened too. And that’s all I really cared about. … I believe you could respect that I just didn’t want to bring attention to anything, I just wasn’t trying to get into a negative back and forth with her [or] any sort of narrative online where my daughter was going to look back and read that.”
Malik also went on to discuss his parenting style and how he co-parents with Gigi, including his desire for more time with his only daughter. “I’m super full-on, hands-on with my child every chance I can be,” he said. “If I could get 60 percent [custody], I would have it.”
