Jenny McCarthy, Melissa McCarthy’s cousin, stood up to trolls who criticized Melissa’s weight.
“There is a crazy story going around that I once told my cousin, Melissa, that she would have to lose weight in order to get into show business. Nothing could be further from the truth,” she told People.
Jenny helped Melissa break into the business, by giving her an on-set job on one of her early projects.
Later, when film critic Mark Rex claimed Melissa was a “gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success,” Jenny was quick to publicly respond.
“That’s obnoxious in itself,” McCarthy told us. “For anyone to attack like that, it’s just wrong and hurtful, and it doesn’t do anyone any good—not even Rex Reed, you know?”
