What is said about aging and intercourse can be intimidating and sometimes questionable. Even though time has gone on and our bodies change, it does not mean that pleasurable intercourse has gone out the window. Here are a few of the stigmas and myths that have come with sexuality and aging and why you shouldn’t believe them:
“Only the young are physically attracted to one another.”
In today’s media, we see an abundant number of images that young people are the most sexually attractive because of their youth. It does not mean that it diminishes what makes you attractive, like your kind smile, infectious laugh, or captivating eyes.
According to a survey conducted by Modern Maturity magazine, it was revealed that the percentage of people age 45 and older who consider their partners physically attractive increased with age.
“Sexuality in later life is undignified.”
Society tends to desexualize older adults, and don’t often think that intercourse is desired or needed at an older age. Well, this is not necessarily true because older couples still sometimes want intimacy with one another. According to a survey done by the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, roughly 40 percent of men and women ages 65 to 80 are sexually active.
“Men and women lose their ability to perform sexually after a certain age.”
Even though physical changes are unavoidable as you get older, there are still other ways that can improve your sexual performance. According to Harvard Health, women can use vaginal lubricants and hormone creams and rings for what nature no longer supplies. But it is also important to remember you and your partner have changed but can still adapt to a new sexual relationship.
“Intercourse is boring when you are older.”
With age, comes more experience. Even though intercourse may not be as crazy as it was when you and your partner were younger, it can be a fun, relatable experience for you both. There are also plenty of ways and information out there to make it fun. What is exciting to you at different ages changes over time. Therefore the intercourse that you might have when your older may be plenty exciting enough. It can also create greater emotional intimacy and trust between one another. It is important to stay cautious and communicate if there are any problems that arise.
